ANALYSIS - SCRIPT FOR VLOG

Sound effects are used to provoke humour and to help an audience imagine a specific situation. They have connotations of informality and are often stereotypical day-to-day noises that the audience will relate to. For example, the use of a crowd cheering connotes popularity, the use of a child laughing connotes happiness.

Jingles are often used throughout the radio show to inform the listeners who have just tuned in to which show they're listening to. Jingles, such as 'Big John at Breakfast' and 'Hallam FM'  also promote the radio stations and shows, and by repeating them often  they become catchy and the audience would struggle to forget them after listening for a while. Sounds and noises such as the sound of a rooster crowing, a toaster popping or coffee being stirred all appeal to the audience because they are sounds that connote the morning and breakfast. These noises are all appropriate because they conntote sounds related to breakfast and Big John is on at breakfast time. Jingles can sometimes sound very electronic if they have been enhanced post-production. In some instances, this can create a positive effect, such as the auto-tuning of singing voices. However sometimes enhancing can have a negative effect, like making a realistic noise sound mechanic and electronic.

Vox pops are used by Hallam FM to inform the audience about topics such as weather and travel and public opinion. They are usually recorded away from the main studio, can be live or pre-recorded and generally use a different  presenters or even a member of the public.

Radio stations that have mass audience often interview minor celebrities and the members of the public to entertain the audience. These interviews can be live or pre-recorded and added into the show during post production.

Past and present Hallam FM competitions include;

'Win Your Christmas' - You can 'win everything you'll need for Christmas'. This competition is sponsored by Atkinson's

'Pop Swap' - A competition where listeners can swap items for celebrity memorabilia. This competition is sponsored by each individual piece of memorabilia.

'Big John Pays Your Bills' - Sponsored by Robin Hood Airport Doncaster.

‘Win a Creative Airwave HD’ - This competition was brought to Hallam FM in conjunction with Creative.

Presenters for Hallam FM include Big John, Janine and 'Producer' James.
John Harrison, known more commonly as 'Big John' is from Yorkshire and has a northern accent. This makes it easier for the audience to understand him and relate to the presenter. Also, because Big John is from Yorkshire, he understands northern culture.
Janine Jones has lived in Sheffield for over a decade and absolutely "loves" it. This helps the audience to relate to Janine and warm to her as a presenter. Producer James claims to be "Sheffield born and bred". All in all, these presenters love Sheffield and their accents and attitudes towards Yorkshire helps the audience relate to them.

One of the discussion topics I listened to 'Best Christmas Ever!!!!' As Monday 25th November marked one month until Christmas, Hallam FM wanted listeners to embrace the festivities and share their memories of getting the best Christmas present you’ve ever had.

Hallam FM uses popular music to entice the audience by playing their favourite songs. The music that Hallam FM plays is carefully selected to give a balance of the latest hits and songs that will appeal to and entertain a mainstream audience. This consists of mainly songs that fall under the genre of pop. Hallam FM’s slogan is ‘the best variety of hits’.

Hallam FM often uses audience participation to involve listeners. This includes the uses of Vox Pops and interviews to represent the audience and give them a collective public voice.
Relevant adverts are used to interject between topics. These adverts include; Crystal Peaks, DFS, Vodaphone 4G Sky Sports Mobile, Amigo Loans, Meadowhall, Hallam FM News and Wooster Boilers. These adverts are played because they are accessible to the audience, for example Meadowhall is a largest shopping complex in South Yorkshire.
These adverts all use sound effects to connect with the audience. Sound effects like a shower running or a football crowd help to put the listener in the room and relate with the sounds they recognise. This technique is used widely in the institution to draw people in so that they buy in to a product or service.

Advertisements reinforce the wider brand of Hallam FM by making it appear as if it can help you in many different ways. For instance, an advert for a flexible loan advert can encapsulate the same friendly ethos of the show, making the audience somehow subconsciously believe that the advert is part of Hallam FM.

LO1 TASK 2

Purpose: The purpose of Hallam FM's breakfast radio show 'Big John at Breakfast' is to provide entertainment to its target audience. They do this by engaging with topics that the audience enjoy via discussions, phone-ins, interviews, vox pops and competitions.

Genre: The genre of 'Big John at Breakfast' is defined by the selection of popular music it plays. The show plays pop music and is described as being "adult contemporary because of this.

Form: The radio show, 'Big John at Breakfast', is displayed by the presenters (Big John, Janine and Producer James) as being chatty and informal. Different elements of the show that contribute to this form include competitions, phone-ins, interviews, discussion topics and vox pops.

Style: The style of 'Big John at Breakfast' is informal. This is because the presenters create a friendly, chatty atmosphere through their discussions with each other. It is also informal because it runs competitions, invites celebrities to give interviews and generally takes the target audience's interests and issues that effect them and incorporates them into the show so that it is appropriate and appeals to them.

Content: Content included in 'Big John at Breakfast' exists as interviews with popular, recognisable figures (including bands and artists like McFly in the clip), competitions concerning prizes that the target demographic would like to win (the 'Win your Christmas' competition in the clip), discussion topics regarding topics and themes the audience are interested in or things that apply to their lives (such as the '79% of South Yorkshire men lie to their partners about what at Christmas?') and the phone-in which followed (of which the man won and received four family tickets to the cinema).

Meaning: The content of 'Big John at Breakfast' presents certain meanings to the audience. For example, the presenter 'Big John' himself connotes a meaning - he constantly speaks about his family, implying that he is the stereotypical happy family orientated man. This connotes to the listeners that, because Big John could be considered a role model, what he represents is correct - the right way to do it. In this case, the use of Big John as a presenter could encourage easily-influenced young Dad's to act the same way he does. There are other instances of stereotypes being used in the show and they are incredibly strong because the meaning they convey can influence an individual's perspective and personal views.

Production Process: The production process of 'Big John at Breakfast' adds to the show because it runs using an operating model. This operating model is in place to ensure that each department within the production contributes to each other. The content meetings will contribute to the scripting meetings, because the content meetings decide which content to include in the show and the scripting meetings will devise the script for the presenters to read. the content meetings will also contribute to the playlist selectors, as it is important that the music corresponds with certain discussion topics and introductions. The news department will decide where to send the production team on location if there is any news in the local area and vox pops and interviews need to be taken from the public and/or celebrities or influential figures. All of these contribute to an overall meaning which is conveyed through the completed broadcast.
