Sheffield Live! is a community radio station and a television company. It is independent company that is funded. The independent company who run Sheffield LIve! are Commedia Sheffield Limited. It is run by founder Sangita Basudev. Sheffield Live! is based in The Workstation. It was awarded a license by Ofcom to operate as a community radio station. 

Sheffield Live! content cannot cross over with mainstream content that is already offered to audiences. It's target listnership is dramatically lower than mainstream stations (usually less than 50,000). Sheffield Live! has an 11% reach in its area. This means that around 32,000 adults tune into Sheffield Live! every week. 

It is particularly aimed at residents that live in nether edge, Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley, Darnall, Manor, Arbourthorn, Burngreave and Gleadless. Music output compromises a very diverse mix such as raga, jungle, reggae, dance, African, indie-pop and R'n'B.

Broadcasting Act (1990) and the Community Radio Order (2004) stated that the community radio services cannot gain more than 50% of the running costs from one source advertising or on-air sponsorships. The remainder of the running costs can be met using public funding, grants and National Lottery funds. For example, in 2008/9 it gained a £15,000 grant to fund the wage of a Business Development Fund - because Sangita didn't have a wage!

Sheffield Live! doesn't broadcast via DAB, it still runs on analog and can only be accessed by an FM receiver. The transmits using the Crown Castle Communications tower on Tapton Hill Road. However, it can also be accessed by using simulcasting and podcasting online.

The provision of social gain has four mandatory requirements'
- Provide a service for under served groups
- Facilitate discussion and expression of opinion within the community served
- Provide training or education to people not employed by the station
- Help to strengthen the community served, fostering a greater understanding of its character and needs

According to Ofcom (2011) "Community radio stations are small scale not-for-profit radio stations operated for the good of the public or of particular communities and in order to deliver social gain."
